BANTAM LAKE JUNIOR AND ADULT SAILING PROGRAM
Bantam Lake Yacht Club, in association with Litchfield Parks and Recreation, is sponsoring a junior and adult sailing program this summer and wants to teach 9-18 year old children and adults to learn to sail and/or race sailboats.  We have four Kingfisher dinghies, which are two person collegiate type sailing dinghies, available for instruction.  They are newly outfitted and ready to sail and race.

Junior lessons will take place Tuesday and Thursday and will be taught by Susan Smith a sailor and high school teacher who can be contacted by phone 860-868-0327 or e-mail smithsbhs@yahoo.com.  Lessons will take place beginning the week of June 26th.  There will be group lessons for beginners or intermediate to advanced sailors/racers.  Space is limited.  A student will be considered registered when the fee is paid.  The lessons will consist of 10, two hour lessons over five to six weeks.  A lesson series costs $250.  Individual lessons for children will be available also for $30/hour.

Adult lessons are available for $50/hour.  If there is enough adult interest we may have group lessons as well.  These will be scheduled at mutually convenient times.

On Sunday afternoons competent junior and adult sailors will be able to try their hand at racing. Sailors will race in their own division, in Kingfishers, as part of the regularly scheduled Sunday races at the club.  Sailors may also be asked to crew in bigger boats during the season.

Children and adults need to be able to stay afloat, swimming on their own for 10 minutes, to be able to participate.  Adults must bring their own, and all children must own and wear their own personal flotation device (PFD) during lessons.  If adults do not have, and children do not have and wear their PFDs, they will not sail.

If you are interested in joining the Bantam Yacht Club as an individual or a family, membership is $400 per season with a $50 initiation fee.  If you join the club as a new member this year, your family will be able to sail either your own boat which you can store on the club grounds, or a Kingfisher, once you are cleared to sail on your own by the instructor.  Current members are excited about getting new juniors and adults sailing.  After sailing there are picnic tables and barbecues for use.

If you would like to check out the club and meet members and the instructor, Sunday afternoons are good days to visit.   The club is located at the end of Yacht Club Passageway, off East Shore Road, just up the hill from the state boat launch.  Please call Susan Smith for lessons, or Edward Kavle the club Commodore, 860 567 0054, to inquire about sailing and racing at the club.
