Litchfield Historical Society
Please join the Litchfield Historical Society on June 25 at 5:00 pm at the old train depot located at 28 Russell Street as we commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Shepaug Railroad.
The railroad's final run was made on June 25, 1948, when a load of poles for a local utility company was delivered to Litchfield.
A presentation will be provided by Fletcher Cooper author of The Shepaug Railroad 1872-1948.
The public is invited to view photos and share reminisces of the days when the railroad ran through local towns. Refreshments will be provided.
Litchfield native, Edwin McNeil, a civil engineer, worked tirelessly to establish the Shepaug Valley Railroad Company upon his retirement to Litchfield in 1864.
The charter he obtained from the legislature permitted him to construct from Litchfield through the towns of Morris, Washington, Roxbury, Bridgewater, New Milford, Southbury and Newtown a railroad to connect with the Housatonic Railroad.
Eventually by 1872, an agreement was reached with the Danbury and Norwalk line that connected from their line at Bethel with the Shepaug at Hawleyville.
